What a way to kick off the high school football season! In a thrilling opener packed with big plays, sudden shifts in momentum, and clutch fourth-quarter execution, the Chelsea Bulldogs secured a hard-fought 29-20 victory over the Harper Woods Pioneers. Lightning Strikes First If anyone in the stands arrived late, they missed fireworks right out of the gate. On the very first play of the game, Gibby Ichesco ignited the crowd by taking it 72 yards to the house. Though the extra point attempt was no good, the message was clear: Chelsea came to play. The Bulldogs doubled down later in the opening quarter. Capping off a relentless drive, Nolan Sciackitano punched it in from 1 yard out with 1:08 left in the 1st quarter. A successful two-point conversion extended Chelsea's early lead to 14-0. Harper Woods Fights Back The Pioneers refused to go down quietly. Early in the second quarter (11:09), Harper Woods answered with a 5-yard touchdown run to cut into the lead at 14-6 following a missed extra point. Chelsea answered right back when quarterback Jax Ichesco called his own number on a 13-yard keeper, finding paydirt with 3:56 remaining before halftime. The missed two-point attempt kept the score at 20-6. Harper Woods struck once more before the break with a touchdown at the 2:31 mark, bringing the halftime tally to 20-12 in favor of the Bulldogs. High-Stakes Second Half The tide turned coming out of the locker room. Harper Woods came out aggressive in the 3rd quarter, striking quickly at 9:03 to tie the game at 20-20. Defense took center stage for the remainder of the quarter as both teams locked down, sending the game into the final 12 minutes deadlocked. Fourth-Quarter Heroics With everything on the line, Chelsea’s leaders stepped up in the clutch: With 7:13 left on the clock, Nolan Sciackitano found the end zone again from a yard out. Though the two-point try fell short, the Bulldogs reclaimed a 26-20 lead. Then with Harper Woods driving to respond, Parker Clark came up with the defensive play of the night—recovering a huge fumble to hand Chelsea the ball on the Harper Woods 26-yard line with just 3:33 remaining. Chelsea was able to capitalize on the turnover by burning the clock and icing the game with 51 seconds remaining, as Landon Conley drilled a clutch 34-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game and seal the win at 29-20. In his first game Chelsea's defensive coordinator, Tyler Santoro noted, "We played as a team all night. The boys made the big plays when it was needed. This was a big win for us as a program to start the season strong." Head Coach Noel Dean was proud of the team and coaching staff. "We had spent a lot of time this off season preparing for this game and making it a team event. We needed to build off each other's momentum. I think the game plan we had defensively was great. I was proud of Tyler and the kids and how they responded." Chelsea will carry this momentum into next week's SEC White opener as the Bulldogs host Jackson at 7:00 PM.
