Lockdown Defense Propels Chelsea Past Marshall; Regional Final Rematch Set

The Chelsea Bulldogs are heading back to the regional championship, but they had to weather an early storm and rely on a stifling defensive performance to get there. Behind a dominant second half, Chelsea defeated Marshall 54-40 in the MHSAA Division 2 regional semifinal on Tuesday night. A Tale of Two Halves The game didn't start exactly as the Bulldogs scripted. Marshall came out aggressive, finding gaps in the Chelsea perimeter and carving out a 16-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. Chelsea managed to settle their nerves in the second, piecing together enough stops to nudge ahead for a narrow 25-23 lead at the halftime break. However, the second half belonged entirely to the Bulldogs' defense. Chelsea’s coaching staff clearly made the right adjustments in the locker room, as the team suffocated Marshall’s offense, holding them to just 17 total points over the final two frames. That defensive stand allowed Chelsea to pull away and secure the 14-point victory. --- The Rematch Everyone Wanted The win sets the stage for one of the most anticipated matchups in the state. Chelsea now advances to the regional final to face Lansing Sexton who defeated Michigan Center 58-55. The Bulldogs will certainly be thirsty for redemption The Venue: Fowlerville High School The Time: 7:00 PM The Stakes: A trip to the Division 2 Quarterfinals Last year, these two squads met in this exact round in a game that ended in heartbreak for the Bulldogs. Sexton took the title on a miraculous 3/4-court shot at the buzzer—a highlight that has likely been playing on a loop in the minds of Chelsea’s returning players. Looking Ahead The winner of the Chelsea-Sexton clash will move on to the Division 2 State Quarterfinals, which, in a twist of scheduling fate, will be hosted at Chelsea High School next Tuesday. The Bulldogs have the momentum and the defensive identity to make a deep run, but they'll need to maintain that four-quarter intensity to exorcise the ghosts of last year's buzzer-beater.
